Warsaw's New Coffee Comes Through a Window. The County's New Passport Points You Toward a Table

October 22, 2026

Two national coffee chains opened in Warsaw between the end of August and mid-September, and a third is planned. The two that opened serve customers through a window, and the third was proposed as a drive-thru. Two weeks after the second one opened, the Kosciusko County Convention & Visitors Bureau launched a free digital passport that lists only locally owned coffee shops. In Warsaw, most of those shops are close together on a few blocks of Buffalo and Center streets.

So South Buffalo Street now has both kinds of coffee stop. A drive-thru opened at its south end this fall. Farther north, downtown, you'll find counters, tables and a porch-and-patio culture that the county is now promoting through next February.

Two drive-thrus open, a third planned

In July, InkFreeNews reported that three coffee chains were building in Warsaw at once. Here's where each one stands now:

  • Scooter's Coffee, 500 S. Buffalo St. It sits in front of the old Marsh building and was developed by G Squared Development LLC. It soft-launched on Monday, Aug. 31, and News Now Warsaw described it as a drive-thru operation. It held a ribbon cutting on Sept. 30 to mark its first month.
  • Dutch Bros. Coffee, 3352 Lake City Highway. It opened officially on Thursday, Sept. 17, with a drive-through and a walk-up window and no indoor dining room, according to InkFreeNews. Before this, the closest Dutch Bros was in Auburn.
  • Biggby Coffee, Parker Street near Dubois Drive. The Warsaw Plan Commission approved a three-lot subdivision in March, with Biggby planned for lot 1, across Parker Street from Lassus. The coffee shop's own site plan still needed a separate technical review, and the concept described a "drive-thru portal" with a two-lane queue. No opening date has been announced. The nearest Biggby shops are in Goshen and Plymouth.

All three are built or proposed around a car moving through a lane. That suits a commute down Lake City Highway. It doesn't help much with a Saturday morning, a laptop session or meeting a friend.

The county's answer runs on a phone

On Oct. 1, the Kosciusko County Convention & Visitors Bureau launched the Coffee Trail Passport. It lists 17 locally owned spots across the county that serve coffee, tea and treats. No chains are on it.

Here's how it works, per the official passport page. The passport is mobile-only and arrives by text and email, so there's no app to download. You check in at each stop by GPS or with a four-digit PIN, and you show your phone to redeem any discount. Six check-ins by Feb. 10, 2027, enter you in a drawing on Feb. 11, which is National Latte Day. The prize is more than $150 in gift cards and merchandise from participating shops. Visiting every location earns a bonus entry. Some shops offer pass-holder discounts, and those offers show up inside the passport.

The bureau pitches it to residents as much as to visitors. Brooke Danner, the bureau's marketing and communications manager, put it this way in the launch release published by InkFreeNews:

"We have so many great locally owned coffee shops in our county. If you're an iced coffee lover like me, this is the perfect excuse to stop by an old favorite or check out something new."

You can finish the passport without leaving Warsaw and Winona Lake. Six different Warsaw-area businesses are on the list: Creighton's Crazy Egg Café & Coffee Bar, Maggie's Coffee and Treats, The Grove Coffee Collective, The River, Three Crowns Coffee and WL Café. The River also has locations in Milford, North Webster and Syracuse, and other stops reach Mentone, Pierceton and Silver Lake for anyone who wants a longer drive.

Buffalo Street has both kinds of coffee stop

From the drive-thru at 500 S. Buffalo St., the passport's downtown stops are a short walk north. Most sit within the 100 blocks of Buffalo and Center streets. Going south to north:

  1. Maggie's Coffee and Treats, 124 S. Buffalo St. A passport stop just south of Center Street.
  2. The River and Generous Coffee Roastery, 121 W. Center St. The River moved into Generous Coffee's downtown space, and the two held a joint grand opening on May 9, as InkFreeNews reported. The River's downtown shop counts for the passport. Generous Coffee isn't on the passport list, so plan on a second cup if you want both.
  3. Alchemy by The Pumpkin Pâtisserie, 102 E. Center St. A beverage bar with coffee and other drinks, plus pastry. It's another downtown stop that isn't on the passport.
  4. The Grove Coffee Collective, 108 N. Buffalo St. A passport stop just north of Center.
  5. Three Crowns Coffee, 347 N. Buffalo St. This is a planned move. In April, the Warsaw Board of Zoning Appeals voted 4–1 to approve a coffee-shop variance for the address. At the time, Three Crowns was operating at 941 N. Detroit St. The plans call for a walk-in shop with about 15 tables. Check the shop's own channels for the current location before you go.

So the newest coffee investment downtown faces a sidewalk, and the newest investment on the south edge faces a drive-thru lane. Both are on the same street.

Downtown has also changed since summer. Main Street Warsaw and the Warsaw Public Arts Commission unveiled two utility-box murals: Lia Geiger's "Know Love & Share It" at Buffalo and Center and Amani Rodriguez's "Be Thyself" at Indiana and Center. New "Downtown Warsaw" signs went up on the south and east sides of 220 S. Buffalo St. in September. You'll pass the Buffalo and Center mural on the way from Maggie's to The Grove.

Winona Lake and the west side fill in the rest

Three of the six Warsaw-area businesses on the passport are outside the downtown blocks.

The River Coffeehouse, 1000 Park Ave., The Village at Winona. Beyond coffee, this location serves breakfast sandwiches, panini and pizza, and it has porch seating and seasonal specials.

WL Café, 1200 Kings Hwy., Winona Lake. It's inside Winona Lake Grace Church and serves espresso drinks, specialty lattes and seasonal drinks. It opened to the public in September 2025, according to InkFreeNews, so this fall marks its first full year.

Creighton's Crazy Egg Café & Coffee Bar, 4217 W. Old Road 30, Warsaw. The west-side stop. It's the one that takes a dedicated drive for most people working through the passport.

Six stops before Feb. 10, spread across the calendar

The passport window runs from now through Feb. 10, 2027, and several downtown and Winona Lake events fall inside it. If you want to spread your stops out, these dates give you a reason to be near the shops anyway:

  • Friday, Oct. 30, 5 to 7 p.m. Main Street Warsaw's Spooktacular 2026 sets up downtown at 101 W. Center St. It's trick-or-treating only, with no sales. The River and Generous are on the same block, and Maggie's and The Grove are around the corner on Buffalo.
  • Saturday, Oct. 31, 5:30 to 8 p.m. These are Warsaw's city trick-or-treat hours, per InkFreeNews.
  • Saturday, Nov. 21, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The Village at Winona hosts its Tree Lighting Ceremony, with a Toys for Tots collection, ornament-making for kids, train rides and carolers. Santa visits from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., and the tree is lit at 6:15. The River at 1000 Park Ave. is in the Village.
  • Friday, Dec. 4, 5 to 8 p.m. Main Street Warsaw's Downtown Christmas Celebration brings music, a tree lighting, carriage rides, a twinkle-light parade and a Christmas market.

Done that way, the downtown stops cover three or four check-ins over Halloween and early December, the Village shop covers one at the tree lighting, and WL Café and Creighton's cover the rest on any weekday morning in January. That gets you to six with weeks to spare before the Feb. 11 drawing.

If you spend some of those mornings wondering what the homes on the streets around the Village or downtown Buffalo are like, that's a conversation we enjoy. Michael Lee and the Granite Team follow how Warsaw and Winona Lake change, down to which corner is getting a new coffee shop. Let's Connect.
